The DAAD Regional Office Cairo invites you to participate in the public lectures on the last theme of the “OIB-COSIMENA Research Colloquium on New Islamic Ethics in the Present and Future”, namely Biomedical Ethics which is organised in cooperation with the Orient Institut Beirut (OIB) within the framework of the DAAD project “Clusters of Scientific Innovation in the Middle East and North Africa” (COSIMENA).

1. First OIB-COSIMENA Lecture on Biomedical Ethics

Biography of the Speaker

Nils Fischer studied Philosophy, Islamic Studies, Arabic and Iranian Studies in Bonn, Tehran and Damascus. He worked at different German universities (Vinzenz Pallotti University in Vallendar, Humboldt-University in Berlin, University of Bonn) in different positions (university administration, senior research assistant, lecturer, student assistant) mainly at interdisciplinary ethics and health departments.

2. Second OIB-COSIMENA Lecture on Biomedical Ethics

Biography of the Speaker

© Dr Bjoern Bentlage

Bjoern Bentlage is a post-doc researcher at the University of Munich, where he provisionally heads a research group on Arabic Mass Media. His current research focuses on Arabic travel writing and pilgrimage since the Early Modern period. Past projects and continuing interests concern law and culture in contemporary Egypt, especially with regard to Islamic Bioethics, and the entangled history of the Middle East. Björn was a member of Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Studies in 2020, served as an interim professor at the University of Münster (2020) and  at Leipzig University (2022-23). After studying in Bochum and Alexandria, he received his doctorate in 2016 at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany, where he was a lecturer from 2010 to 2022.

3. Third OIB-COSIMENA Lecture on Biomedical Ethics

Biography of the Speaker

© Dr Hadil Lababidi

Dr Hadil Lababidi is a Lecturer at the University of Zurich. She has a Master of Arts from Leiden University in Modern Middle East Studies and received her doctorate in Islamic theology. She completed her PhD degree in February 2023 at Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nürnberg and was awarded the DAVO Dissertation Prize 2023. Lababidi’s doctoral thesis »Rūḥ and Nafs: From Breath of Life to Selfhood. Basic Questions of Bioethics in Islam Using the Example of Tube Feeding at the End of Life in Dementia» is published (in German) at EB-Verlag. The study is expected to be published in English by Brill in 2024. Lababidi co-founded the working group “Medical Ethics and Islam” and co-edits the Journal of Medicine, Ethics & Islam.

4. Fourth OIB-COSIMENA Lecture on Biomedical Ethics

Biography of the Speaker

Dr Anna M. Gade is Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor in the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Having authored two major books on the Qur’an, her most recent book is Muslim Environmentalisms: Religious and Social Foundations (Columbia University Press, 2019). Her forthcoming work is on new paradigms for environmental ethics.
